Carpe Diem

You don’t know what tomorrow has to say,
And why think about yesterday gone by?
Carpe diem, seize the day!
Why just work and not play,
This moment you are alive, tomorrow you may just die,
You don’t know what tomorrow has to say.
Time flies by in its own way,
But with it, you can also choose to fly,
Carpe diem, seize the day!
You may not get an answer for all that you pray,
But can’t let today go away without giving it a try,
You don’t know what tomorrow has to say.
Take risks, keep moving, in a place just don’t stay,
Today is the best day to fly high,
Carpe diem, seize the day!
The sun is shining now, make hay,
Time is something that you can never buy.
You don’t know what tomorrow has to say,
Carpe diem, seize the day!
This form of poetry is called a Villanelle. The villanelle has 19 lines, split into 5 tercets (three-line stanzas)
and 1 quatrain (a stanza of 4 lines). There are two repeating rhymes and
two “refrains,” or repeated lines.
The 1st and 3rd lines alternate as the last lines of stanzas 2, 3,
and 4. The last stanza uses the 1st and 3rd lines as a rhymed couplet.
If we use capitals for the refrains and lowercase letters for the
rhymes, the form could be expressed as: A1 b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b
A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 A2
