Mood Indigo

mood indigo

“I always get that mood indigo,
Since my baby said goodbye.
And in the evenin’ when the lights are low,
I’m so lonely I could cry.”
The song was played on the radio as I was sitting in the car, waiting for the signal to turn green. Ah! That song! It was one of my favourites a few years ago. But it had an air of melancholy to it and I was reminded of my painful memories. It was my first day in college and I was excited to have made it to my dream college. But my parents were far more excited and though I’d told them that I’d manage to travel alone to college, they had insisted on coming along with me and had ensured that I was comfortably settled in the new city. As I was just finding my way around the college campus, I got a call that changed my life. My parents had met with an accident and lost their lives in that accident. My mind went blank and I didn’t know what to do. I had rushed into the closest building which happened to be the library and there was a group of guys, seniors I assumed who were trying to talk to me. But I heard nothing of what they said. The pain was too much to bear.
That first day of college was the last day too. I had to go back to my hometown because I not only had to fend for myself, but I also had to take care of my little brother who was still in school. Life was difficult but I couldn’t give. I somehow managed to get a job that paid me enough to make ends meet. My eyes well up with tears when I even think about those times.
But life is a lot better now. Call it blessings or a stroke of luck, the firm that I was working for came across some of the things I had written during my spare time. It was my way of dealing with all that life had to offer me and I never intended to publish it. But then people at work who read it were interested in getting it published.  And that is where I am headed now – the launch of my book.
When I sit back and think about it all, I wonder how different life would turn out to be! How would college be like? How well would I fare in my course? I don’t know! The last that I had heard about college was from the only friend I had managed to make on that first day. She had told me that a bunch of seniors had nicknamed me “The Shrinking Violet”
Was I really a shrinking violet or had life made me one?
But with that, I had decided on the title for my book.
I wish life would be different. But no matter how much I wished for it, would it really be different?
I went back to being in my mood indigo.

barathon
I’m participating in Bar-A-Thon and this post is my second post.
This time the theme for the Bar-A-Thon is “Seven”. I chose the seven colours of the rainbow. So each of my posts will be titled according to the colours of the rainbow.
Initially I had thought of writing separate stories for the Barathon. But now it looks like this is going to be a series! 😀

How much ever you fret, its impossible to change the past. Lovely piece. A song can bring out so many memories, totally random yet related.

  3. Ooh… this format is definitely better. I like that it’s interconnected snippets!

We now have the perspective of the author, and the seniors. What’s next for tomorrow? #suspense
