#AtoZChallenge : Cacoethes
Doing what she wasn’t supposed to gave her a feeling of satisfaction. It was actually more than satisfaction – it was the sense of achievement, a strange feeling of pleasure that she derived that kept her going. The ways of the world were too straight for her to be followed. She loved doing things her way. She paid no heed to other’s advice. When someone asked her to not do something, her cacoethes only increased because that was what that kept her going. The world labelled her with various names – some just bad, some unkind, some of which she never deserved.
But was she always like this?
If it was the advice of the world that she went against now, it was the advice of the same world that she’d followed. She’d embraced the ways and rules of the world as if they were all a part of her. She’d try to live within the boundaries that were set for her. But the only rewards she received were pain, dejection and humiliation. For the ways of the world that she’d embraced had left her at a dead end. The world whose rules and regulations to follow had left her alone when she needed it. It was only then that she’d realized that it was all a facade. For the world didn’t stand by her when she needed it. The boundaries that were set had strangled her till the point she’d decided that she had to change.
When all advice had failed, she’d decided to listen to her heart. What the world labelled as cacoethes, was her heart’s calling.
Who was wrong then? Her or the world?
Cacoethes : An urge to do something inadvisable
Origin : Greek
Thank you Vinay for suggesting the word!

I’m participating in the A to Z Challenge again this year. I’ve done it twice earlier. This time when I decided to take up the challenge, I didn’t have a theme in mind. But as I begin this challenge, I’m going with a theme. It is going to be “Rare, unusual and beautiful words from various languages” . I’m not going to stick to one form of writing – it will be a mix of poetry, fiction and some abstract writing. Hope you’ll all support me with it .

Wow! If Boketto was good, Cacoethes is even better. I usually find young kids and children deriving pleasure from doing the inadvisable and attracting parents’ anger.
Loving the word magic. Good post!
She sounds like me. Exactly like me to be honest 🙂
Loving the words and your theme, Reema. Great going <3
Ah! The birth of a rebel 😉
Both are right 🙂 She has her way. And the world has its 🙂 I love this post! It’s very empowering.
If I were to say that I am on the threshold of bringing Cacoethes in my attitude soon in my life, it wouldn’t be wrong. We spend too much time thinking about others, yet find no happiness in that. Its better to live life on self established terms. Loved your post.
Wait!!! Dont I always have this urge????? Kidding but theres nothing wrong with her, and nor is the world. Its the complex situation of life!!
In todays world where we are juggling finding our keys and gobbling down breakfast, this list seems so out of dated and useless. But thats precisely the reason why its important! We have made everything such a hurry worry effort in our life, that we are missing out on enjoying the life we are living! Great points there V and though I dont do all of it, I have slowed down my meal times and do think about what am I eating, where it came from and how healthy it is for me! I think she’s right because at the end of the day, only she can decide whats right for her. And, sometimes doing the inadvisable is the best thing in life 🙂
